A rematch of Northern Colorado’s first USL League One game.
Venturing out on the road again, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC is making their second trip of the season to Virginia to take on the Richmond Kickers. The Hailstorm are coming in with six points in their last four matches and are one of only two teams to have a current unbeaten streak of four or more.
USL League One is proving to be a tight league this season. A third of the way into the season, Richmond is sitting in first place on 15 points while there are eight other teams within two points of catching them. Due to additional games in hand, Richmond is also susceptible to being passed by Northern Colorado.
Richmond has the best goal differential of any team in the league this season. Part of that comes thanks to the joint top scorers on the team, Matthew Bentley and Emiliano Terzaghi, each with four goals a piece. The side also has the league leader in assists, Jonathan Bolanos. Bolanos had three assists last time out against the Charlotte Independence. Setting up a lot of those chances is Nil Vinyals who is second in the league with 22 chances created.
The strong front of Richmond isn’t where the team’s strength stops. In goal is three-time Team of the Week member Akira Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has been one of the top keepers in the league all season, with a league leading 36 saves and three clean sheets. The Japanese keeper has started every match this season for the Kickers.
Johan Peñaranda has started between the sticks in the last four matches for Northern Colorado. Peñaranda has won one match and drawn three, while keeping one clean sheet and making nine saves.
After his last goal was #2 on ESPN SportCenter’s Top 10 plays for June 8. His four goals are tied with Bentley and Terzaghi for fourth most in the league. Parra has scored one goal every other match to this point in the season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT/4:30 p.m. MDT at the City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. Expect great weather for the match, temperature in the high 70’s with few to no clouds. The game, as with all USL League One, will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Opening in 2022, the 118-acre Future Legends Complex will feature two stadiums, multiple baseball diamonds and multi-purpose fields, an indoor sports arena, lodging, and retail; and will host guests for major sports tournaments, events, leagues, and more.
