SEVERANCE, Colo. (Saturday, August 20, 2022) – Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC (6W-9L-8D, 26 points) fell to Forward Madison FC (7W-5L-9D, 30 points) 3-1 at Severance High School. A pair of Jeremiah Streng goals for Madison sealed the deal in the second half.
The Hailstorm were the ones to get the game going when a penalty was called in the box against Madison’s captain Mitchell Osmond. Irvin Parra stepped up to the spot and scored his 10th goal of the season. The first Northern Colorado player to reach a double digit tally.
Forward Madison got themselves back in the match back just before the half hour mark. Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu sent a long ball for Derek Gebhard, who was able to make some moves in the Hailstorm box to give himself a chance. Burying it in at the far post and leveling the scoreline.
The first red card of the evening came shortly thereafter. Leo Folla was the recipient for a challenge in the 38th minute. Leaving the Hailstorm with 10 men the rest of the match.
Streng was able to put the Flamingos in front with a tap in from a yard out, just past the hour mark. He would add another in the 82nd minute, finding some space between the defenders of the Northern Colorado back line to receive a long ball from Matheus Cassini.
The night would end with two more red cards issued to the Hailstorm. Substitutes Trevor Amann and Rob Cornwall recieved these cards, leaving the Hailstorm to see the match out with eight men on the pitch. Just adding to a night to forget for Northern Colorado.
The Hailstorm is back in action on August 27 when they pay a visit to the Greenville Triumph SC. The match will kick off at 5 p.m. MDT, at the Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina.
Match Quotes:
Head Coach Éamon Zayed
On the match…
“Discipline tonight cost us the game. I couldn’t ask for a better start, I’ll be honest it was a soft penalty but we’ll take it. My message at halftime was keep the discipline because if you leave a decision in a official’s hands it can easily go the way we don’t want it to go.”
Head Coach Éamon Zayed
On moving on to the next match…
“As long as there is a mathematical chance (to make the playoffs), we’ll keep going. There is seven games to go, we set a target before the Tucson game of five wins to get to the playoffs. I won’t give up, I won’t throw in the towel. I know there is a good group of guys in there that let themselves down tonight, there a good group of guys and we won’t give up.”
Head Coach Éamon Zayed
On the crowd…
“The crowd was great. Despite the weather that delayed the game, we looked around before the game and said to ourselves that this was the best crowd we’ve had so far. It makes it more disappointing that we didn’t give them the result and the performance. Thankful for the crowd, and I hope they give us another chance, come back with the same numbers next time we’re at home. For me I’ll try to promise a better proformance.”
Forward Irvin Parra
On the match…
“In reality we lost, we didn’t get the three points that we really needed. Especially at home, you know being at home normally you feel you have momentum. The crowd really was out there tonight, I really appreciate the fans . The fans out here coming to this game to support us, it really means a lot to me and the rest of the guys”
Defender Brecc Evans
On previous experience in North Texas…
“I’m just telling the guys we have seven games left. That’s an opportunity to get 21 points. Also, that the pressure is really on to win on the road, we haven’t been winning enough on the road. Going to Greenville next weekend it will be a huge match for us to overcome the adversity and get three points.”
