CARY, N.C. — They say turnabout is fair play.
Exactly one month after North Carolina FC ended Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC’s 12-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win, Hailstorm turned the tables and ended NCFC’s 10-match unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory at WakeMed Soccer Park. The win also snapped a six-match winless run for Northern Colorado and moved them to third in the USL League One table.
“For me, best win of the season so far,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said.
Hailstorm forward Trevor Amann opened the scoring, taking a pass from Noah Powder on the counterattack and firing past NCFC goalkeeper Brooks Thompson to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.
“We got a win in a tough place to come and get a win, so it motivates the team to continue pushing forward,” Amann said.
Not only was it a crucial goal for Amann, but it was his 18th of the season, tying Richmond’s Emiliano Terzaghi for the USL League One single-season record.
“He’s on fire, having a great season,” Zayed said. “I hope he doesn’t just break the record, I hope he smashes the record. If he keeps playing like he has been, he will.”
Hailstorm took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the league leaders fought back early in the second half as defender David Garcia headed home a corner in the 52nd minute to make it a 1-1 game.
The game stayed level for just 12 minutes, as Stefan Lukic lofted a through ball for Bruno Rendon in the 64th minute and the Hailstorm defender did the rest, slotting his fourth goal of the season past Thompson to give Hailstorm a 2-1 lead.
“I’m just happy to be able to contribute to the win, especially after missing the game on Wednesday,” Rendon said.
From there it was up to Hailstorm to hold onto the lead, which they did to secure their first win since July 22.
After picking up four points on their two-match road trip, Northern Colorado will return home for three straight matches, the first of which is at 4 p.m. Mountain time on September 3 against Charlotte Independence at Future Legends Field.
