MADISON, Wis. — Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC’s club-record five-match winning streak came to an end on Wednesday with a 0-0 draw against Forward Madison FC.
“We’re content after the game with a point, but before the game we wanted three,” Hailstorm head coach Éamon Zayed said.
The draw did move Hailstorm a point ahead of Union Omaha at the top of the USL League One table and extend their unbeaten run to eight matches.
The first half turned into a show for the two goalkeepers, with Madison keeper Bernd Schipmann making two fine saves against Hailstorm forward Trevor Amann and Hailstorm’s Lalo Delgado making his fourth penalty save of the season, sending the teams to the locker rooms scoreless at the break.
“It’s probably the two best goalkeepers in the league,” Zayed said. “Schipmann made a couple of good saves tonight against Trevor in particular, and then Lalo comes up trumps again with the penalty save.”
Delgado’s fourth penalty save set a new career record for USL League One goalkeepers, a feat he accomplished in less than a full season.
“Just happy I’m able to save the penalty and keep the team in the game,” Delgado said.
After the break there was less action for the goalkeepers, as the two teams combined for just one shot on target, which was acrobatically saved by Delgado in the 65th minute.
“It’s good to get a clean sheet at home and onto the next one,” Hailstorm defender Rob Cornwall said.
The next one comes when Hailstorm return to Future Legends Field Saturday against North Carolina FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mountain time.
