WINDSOR, Colo. — After an historic 2023 season, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC forward Trevor Amann has been named the USL League One Player of the Year.
“It is an honor to win this award, so thank you,” Amann said. “But It’s really a testament to all my teammates for putting me in great positions and believing in me all year.”
Amann scored 23 goals for Hailstorm this season, smashing the USL League One single-season record, which was previously 18 set by Richmond’s Emiliano Terzaghi in 2021. He also scored a goal in the U.S. Open Cup and added a hat trick in Hailstorm’s first ever playoff match against Forward Madison FC.
“I think this was probably one of the easiest decisions anybody’s made, in terms of the awards, in USL League One history,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said. “For someone to not only just break the all-time goal scoring record, but to absolutely smash it with 23 goals, and obviously adding three in the playoffs, it’s phenomenal.”
Amann did not score in Hailstorm’s first three league games of the season, but bagged a brace, the first of seven for him in 2023, at eventual Players’ Shield winners Union Omaha in late April, starting a barrage of seven goals in four matches.
Scoring in bunches was a theme for Amann in 2023. In addition to his seven goals in four matches early in the season he scored six in four twice, the latter of which included his playoff hat trick.
“His goals, his work rate, how much he’s developed from start to finish, it’s been magnificent,” Zayed said.
Amann broke the league’s single-season goal-scoring record with a sixth-minute strike against Charlotte Independence on September 3. He became the first player in league history to score 20 goals in a season by converting a penalty against Central Valley Fuego FC on September 16.
He is the first player in Hailstorm history to be named USL League One Player of the Year.
“Fantastic for the club and fantastic for Trevor. Absolutely well-deserved. I’m delighted for him,” Zayed said.
