WINDSOR, Colo. — Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC will open their inaugural USL Jägermeister Cup campaign at Union Omaha on Wednesday.
Hailstorm are in the West Group for the Jägermeister Cup, along with Omaha, Central Valley Fuego FC and Spokane Velocity FC. Fuego beat Spokane in a penalty shootout after the group’s opening match ended in a 1-1 draw. All draws in the cup will go to penalties, with the winner getting an extra point in the standings.
“It’s exciting and it’s fun and innovative,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said of the Cup. “It was good to watch the games over the weekend, three of them going to penalty kicks.”
Both teams come into their opening Cup match on the back of draws in USL League One play, with Hailstorm getting a stoppage time foal from forward Ethan Hoard to secure a 1-1 result at Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, and Union Omaha drawing 0-0 at home against Charlotte Independence.
“This will be a good test for us to move to the top of the group,” Hailstorm midfielder Chelo Martinez said.
A regulation win in Omaha would put Hailstorm on top of the group after the first of eight group matches. The match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
