WINDSOR, Colo. — For the second time this season, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC defender David Garcia scored in stoppage time to give his team a win.
Garcia headed in Danny Robles’ corner in the 95th minute to propel Hailstorm to a 2-1 win over One Knoxville SC Monday night at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium.
“I’ve had multiple opportunities in the last few games, so finally it came at the right time,” Garcia said.
Garcia also scored a 121st minute winner in Hailstorm’s 3-2 win over Colorado Rapids 2 in the U.S. Open Cup in April.
As late as they left it to win the match, Hailstorm started the scoring just as early, with Bruno Rendon scoring from a free kick that was flicked on by Pat Langlois. It was Rendon’s seventh goal in the last six matches and Langlois’ first goal contribution in a Hailstorm shirt.
“I just made the run to the front post, got the flick on, and Bruno put it away,” Langlois said.
Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said he was pleased to score a pair of goals from set pieces in the win.
“I’ve made a habit of being a coach who really believes in set pieces,” Zayed said. “This year hasn’t been the best, so it’s nice to see two set piece goals.”
Knoxville scored their lone goal from a penalty in the 88th minute, setting up the dramatic win for Northern Colorado.
“Three points is three points, that’s absolutely the most important thing. Don’t really care how we get it,” Zayed said.
Hailstorm will be back in action Saturday on the road against the Richmond Kickers, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
