WINDSOR, Colo. — In a tight USL League One table that has just six points separating second from seventh with four matches to play, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC have a chance to move one step closer to a home playoff match when they host South Georgia Tormenta FC on Saturday.
Hailstorm currently sit fourth in the table, a point behind Charlotte Independence and three behind Forward Madison FC, who face each other tonight in Charlotte.
“We’re looking up the table,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said. “Charlotte and Madison are ahead of us, and we have to play both teams, so if we can pick up three points tomorrow it’ll put us up to third place no matter what happens tonight.”
Between Hailstorm and those three points is a Tormenta side in a playoff battle of their own. They currently sit ninth in the USL League One table, level on points with Richmond for the final playoff spot, though the Kickers have the tiebreaker.
The last time the two teams met, Tormenta managed to snatch a stoppage time equalizer, counting out Marky Hernández’s penalty and snatching a point against a 10-man Hailstorm side.
“The lads fought through, almost got the three points. This is a different animal, they’re coming to us,” Zayed said.
Hailstorm and Tormenta kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium, and there is a pre-game party at Peculier Ales in Windsor at 5 p.m.
