WINDSOR, Colo. — Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC solidified their place atop the West Group in the USL Jägermeister Cup with a 2-0 win over Union Omaha on Friday.
The win gives Hailstorm 15 points from their first six group matches and a five-point lead over Omaha with two matches to play.
“We want to win this competition, we’ve said it from the start. so we’re in a good position,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said.
Hailstorm started the scoring early when Billy King got onto a second ball in the ninth minute and fired past Omaha goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. It was King’s second goal of the season, both of them against Omaha in Hailstorm wins.
“It’s two good results against Omaha, who are one of the better teams, if not the best, in the league. So it’s good signs for us,” King said.
It took an hour of game time for the ball to find the back of the net again, with Hailstorm’s second goal coming from the head of Brecc Evans, who got on the end of Jackson Dietrich’s corner kick to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute.
“Jackson was on the corner and it went through a lot of bodies, I just put my head in the danger zone and it hit it,” Evans said.
Also of note in the match was a debut for Hailstorm goalkeeper Russell Shealy, who entered for an injured Lalo Delgado in the 80th minute and helped to preserve the clean sheet.
“He made one really massive save and made another good save as well,” Zayed said. “It’s great for the lad, massive for his confidence.”
Hailstorm will now have eight days off before returning to USL League One play with a trip to Forward Madison FC on July 27.
